Resident Cardiac Progenitor Cells

چکیده
Neufeld Cardiac Research Institute, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel Abstract Resident cardiac stem/progenitor cells are implicated in cell replacement, repair and maintenance of the myocardium. These cells are already committed to a specific cardiomyogenic pathway. Stimulation of these cells in injured hearts can open new options in cardiovascular regenerative medicine, and advance our approach to patients with end-stage heart failure. This chapter reviews some of the recent discoveries in the field of resident cardiac stem/progenitor cells, focusing first on human cardiac stem cell characteristics and reparative potential, including the concept of myocardial regeneration. In addition, we will briefly review recent clinical trials, controversies and unresolved issues.

Pursuing Cardiac Progenitors: Regeneration Redux
Recent studies have questioned the accepted dogma that the regenerative capacity of the heart following injury is limited. Several apparently distinct populations of resident cardiac progenitor cells may have the potential to regenerate functional heart muscle. Despite this progress, the physiologic role and therapeutic potential of cardiac resident progenitor cells remain unclear.
متن کاملEpicardial Origin of Resident Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Adult Mammalian Heart
The discovery of stem and progenitor cells in the adult mammalian heart has added a vital dimension to the field of cardiac regeneration. Cardiac-resident stem cells are likely sequestered as reserve cells within myocardial niches during the course of embryonic cardiogenesis, although they may also be recruited from external sources, such as bone marrow. As we begin to understand the nature of ...

RATIONALE Cardiac progenitor cells are important for maintenance of myocardial structure and function, but molecular mechanisms governing these progenitor cells remain obscure and require elucidation to enhance regenerative therapeutic approaches. OBJECTIVE To understand consequences of stem cell antigen-1 (Sca-1) deletion on functional properties of c-kit+ cardiac progenitor cells and myocar...
متن کاملAre Stem Cells the next Therapeutic Tool for Heart Repair?
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and Europe. In recent years, the understanding that regenerative processes exist at the level of the myocardium, has placed stem cell research at center stage in cardiology. A stem cell is a cell that has the ability to divide (self replicate) for indefinite periods often throughout the life of the ...
متن کاملCardiac stem and progenitor cell identification: different markers for the same cell?
For a long time the heart has been considered a terminally differentiated organ without any regenerative potential. The latter has been classically based on the terminally differentiated nature of cardiomyocytes and the absence of a pool of tissue-specific stem cells. This view has been radically changed due to the discovery of resident cardiac stem and progenitor cells in the adult mammalian h...
